Privacy Policy

Effective date: July 27, 2026

FilmFootnote is a browser extension that identifies film and TV titles selected by users and displays film and TV information and links to external film platforms.

Information FilmFootnote processes

FilmFootnote processes text only when you actively select text on a webpage and click the FilmFootnote button. The selected text is sent to FilmFootnote's serverless backend hosted by Netlify and then to The Movie Database (TMDB) API to search for matching film and TV information.

The extension also uses Chrome synchronized storage to save:

Third-party services

FilmFootnote uses Netlify to operate its serverless backend and TMDB to retrieve film and TV metadata. Requests may be processed according to those providers' own privacy and security practices. When you choose an external platform link, you leave FilmFootnote and visit that platform directly.

Data retention

FilmFootnote does not intentionally retain selected film and TV titles in an application database. Temporary operational logs may be generated by infrastructure providers for security, reliability, and debugging, subject to their retention practices.

Security

FilmFootnote uses HTTPS for communication with its backend. API credentials are stored as server-side environment variables and are not included in the public browser-extension code.

Children

FilmFootnote is not designed to collect personal information from children.

Changes

This policy may be updated when FilmFootnote's functionality or data practices change. The effective date above will be revised when material changes are made.
